The symbolic knits of the Irish sweater
The Irish sweater is known the world over and originated in Ireland's Aran Islands, a land of farmers and fishermen with a harsh climate. A garment designed to protect against cold and damp.
In the early 20th century, every family on the Aran Islands had a unique geometric pattern for their sweaters. In the event of a death at sea, an inspection of the sweater made it possible to determine which family the drowning person came from.
